The Chemistry Department aims to help all pupils reach their potential. New concepts are introduced based on a sound understanding of pupils’ current level of knowledge and expertise, so as to build confidence at each step. Pupils’ natural curiosity is encouraged in order to develop an understanding of Chemistry both as an academic discipline and in its many applications to industrial processes and its impact on our everyday lives. Throughout the course pupils are encouraged to question new ideas and to be rigorous in searching for evidence that supports these concepts. Practical skills are developed to aid understanding, with links being made to the theory. Pupils are asked to consider the rationale for the different stages of practical work and are encouraged to design their own investigations. They are supported in developing a disciplined approach to all aspects of the course, to be organised effectively and to persevere when faced with challenges. Staff are on hand to assist pupils when extra support is needed.
Beyond the classroom we offer a number of wider opportunities including Science Club, which provides an opportunity for Y7 students to develop their interest in practical Science work while working with a team of Y12 students. Students can be inspired by experiments including the elephant’s toothpaste, lava lamps, messy volcanos, alien blood and the ever-popular methane bubbles.
